Choral Ensembles

die meistersinger

Bel Canto (Women's Chorus) and Die Meistersinger (Men's Chorus) are general choirs available to all students with beginning to advanced levels of choral experience. These choirs often combine for church services, concerts and to perform large works with orchestra. Auditions are held each semester. See the Audition and Rehearsal Schedule for full details. Performance opportunities include two to three on-campus concerts per quarter.

Rehearsals: Tuesday & Thursday: 12-12-50 p.m.

I Cantori is comprised of a select group of students with advanced vocal potential and experience. In addition to their role as a distinctive chamber choir, I Cantori forms the leadership core for Bel Canto (Women's Chorus) and Die Meistersinger (Men's Chorus). Eligible students make a commitment to both ensembles for the full academic year. This means that members of I Cantori rehearse Monday through Friday from 12 –12:50 pm:  M, W, F with the chamber choir, and Tu, Th with Bel Canto & Die Meistersinger.

Performance opportunities include off-campus tours.  In May of 2009 the chamber choir had the privilege of presenting a concert tour in Brazil. This inspiring two week event was the highlight of the year.

Auditions are held during the first week of the Fall Semester.  See the Audition and Rehearsal Schedule for full details.

Choral Auditions

Choral singing is one of the most deeply satisfying challenges you will ever experience! You are invited to audition regardless of your level of training. The audition is a painless 10 minute evaluation used to determine the choir you are most prepared for, and the part that you will sing. Read on for specific details about the audition schedule and process.

Sign up! Auditions for Bel Canto & Die Meistersinger will be held during the first week of each semester. I Cantori auditions are held during the first week of the Fall semester. See the Audition and Rehearsal Schedule for full details.

WHO NEEDS TO AUDITION?

•All new students.

•All previous choir members (including former I Cantori students) who wish to sing in I Cantori.

Note: Returning Bel Canto/Die Meistersinger members who wish to continue singing in only Bel Canto or Die Meistersinger are not required to audition. You may audition if you wish to review your part assignment.

The Audition Process

1. Review carefully the above description, scheduling and policies for each of the SAU choral ensembles.

2. Warm up by humming/singing simple scales & melodies.

PAPERWORK. Arrive 5 minutes before your scheduled time in order to write a brief description of your musical experiences. You will also indicate which ensemble(s) you would like to join.

VOCALIZATION. A series of basic scales and exercises allows you to continue to warm up and helps to demonstrate your vocal range.

SIGHT SINGING. You will be given a progressive series of very short melodies to sing and rhythmic passages to clap. The exercises will be tailored to your level of experience.

MEMORY EXERCISES. Short musical sequences (4-8 notes) will be played on the piano. You will be asked to sing the sequence you heard.

PERFORMANCE. You do not need to bring a prepared piece. A selection of well known melodies (e.g. My Country, 'Tis of Thee) will be provided. You will sing the melody of one verse from the song of your choice.
